Mexican Cinema in Germany

In these days of the Mexican film keeps moving into the German cinemas. An initiative of the Instituto Cervantes and SUR movie starts this month, a Mexican film series called “Cine Mexicano Actual” in Hamburg. Every month is now a special Mexican film to be shown to be invited to broadcast its famous guests.The prelude to the series is the movie “Francisca”, a German-Mexican-Spanish production from the year 2002.

The film tells the story of former Stasi informants Helmuth Busch, 1971 after fleeing from his past Mexico. There, he wants to go into hiding, but is unmasked by the Mexican secret service and forced to observe a group of politically active students. In order to avoid extradition to the GDR, it can be agreed and adopted a new identity. Henceforth, he chamber music group as a history professor Bruno Müller at the University of Mexico City. Gradually, it can be increasingly sensitive to the young activists, and finally falls into the student Adela. This passionate love is the Bruno casts into a deep conflict. The film is a rousing tale of love, betrayal and ideals, against the backdrop of the dramatic history of Mexico plays of the 70s: a time in which certain ideals of justice and social change in the lives of a generation. It is an unusual and compelling view of the student movement and to Mexico.
